rs_games, Band of Brothers, Tin Man, and general f-list love
I've received confirmation that my fic for Round Two at But working on it the past few days has been strangely... cathartic. Massive thanks to everyone who cheered me up from all that. Everything you offered was greatly appreciated. I laughed well into the night, and I went back to some of those links for more laughs in the days after. That and the general faffing about with my fandom friends has done wonders. THANK YOU. *hugs* Also: Cutest video EVER (via http://www.chrisvincze.info/film/evol.ht CHECK IT OUT. Staring noneother than Rick Warden (Harry Welsh from BoB!) and his wife Lucy Barker. Speaking of Band of Brothers... *not so subtle change of topic* I worked at Job #2 today, where we have music streamed in from... somewhere. This song came on, and my brain was tingling with 'Hey, I know that!' vibes. And then I BURST OUT LAUGHING. In the middle of the store. Very. Loudly. With snorts and everything. Why, you ask? Because it was 'Summertime' by the recently reunited New Kids on the Block. Normally not such a big deal. I'd just chuckle and move on. But thanks to the crazy kids at Luckily, the store was empty. It being Fourth of July, you know. And for my Tin Man friends, who could care less about Band of Brothers: Added one more thing to my Tin Man personal canon meme. |

ATTENTION: THIS JOURNAL HAS NOW BEEN RENAMED FROM lowlands_girl TO Two days of Anime Expo... I have a handful of pictures that I'll post later when my desk is actually clear enough for me to put the camera down someplace it won't fall. Biggest events so far have been the "Fansubs: the Death of Anime" panel, which was fascinating and informative and irritating as hell (because the US distribution companies, it turns out, go out of their way to avoid contact with their consumers, for fear that the rabid fans will send them 20,000 emails a day), and the "Anime and Manga in Academia" panel, which felt like a waste of time, except that I now feel my work will definitely have an audience, and it was good to know that other smart people out there are also interested in this stuff. I'll write more later, especially about the various shows I saw, dubbing vs. subtitling, cosplay, exhibit halls and artist alley, getting signatures, etc., etc. But for now I think I just want to sit and do nothing, except perhaps read the three volumes of Love Hina I bought for $5 each. :D |

SQUEE.
THIS IS MY NEW FAVOURITE THING EVER OMFG. THEY ARE SO IN LOVE. IN LOVE, I TELL YOU. They lean in to each other so much, their shoulders touching, and their smiiiiles omg. And Skandar says that Edmund's whole character and plot is 'with Peter'!! The way they look at each other just KILLS ME. Also I love how Skandar says they did lots of bungee-jumping and they "found everything [they] could jump off and jumped off it" lololol. Skandar - That was the highest one we did. Will (with sly smile) - Yeah, but it wasn't the best. Skandar - Yeah, no. (looks down) They're totally talking about how they had high-on-adrenaline!sex after the "best" bungee-jump. *nods* THEY ARE, DON'T EVEN TRY AND TELL ME OTHERWISE. ALSO WHY DO I LOVE SKANDAR'S EYEBROWS SO MUCH, WTF.

American Elections
When I made my posts on American elections – Part I and Part II – I wanted a big discussion. But things do not work like that on Live Journal. Big discussions happen when you least expect or want them. That’s why I was very much surprised to receive a very, very good comment. Thanks again, Tyrical! Here are some extracts from it with my thoughts: Bush has been an eye opener for me in the ways of how the smart will disguise themselves as stupid. Bush showed me how willing so many are to be led. Bush also showed me that people who truly believe that what they are doing is right is good and godly; will stop at nothing to see there vision arise. Even when it’s clear it's destroying the world around us. That’s exactly my point! I want to thank George Bush for opening the eyes of millions of Americans. But there are still Americans whose eyes are resolutely closed! Bush’s rating is still about 27%, which, in my opinion, is outrageous. But what I personally find even more outrageous is that there are even more Americans who support McCain, though he is obviously even more schizophrenic than Bush. These Americans also need to open their eyes. And that’s why I wholeheartedly support John McCain. If he wins, his presidency will be a major eye-opening experience for America. It certainly won’t be nice, but who knows, some real change might come after that. History is the ultimate predictor. America's dominance will fall. […] When that happens do you believe Russia will do a better job than America? Has it learned any lessons from watching America? Indeed, all empires fall – sooner or later. And Russia is not that unique, and anyway, Russia has been a superpower twice and we are still hated for that. We will never become the leader of the world again. And in fact we no longer want to dominate the world. We just want to be safe, influential and rich. That’s all. Of course, the Kremlin would like to be the greatest source of power in the world. But however ambitious it might be, it knows that it has had its chances. At best Russia will be able to gain a significant influence on Europe and on Middle East. But even thinking that Russia will be able to take America’s place in the world is stupid: we don’t have and never will have enough resources for that. I am sure China will be the new superpower and I am afraid that it will be worse than America. Who knows, one day Russia and America might unite against the rule of China. ~*~*~*~ Thoughts? |

in every way charming
(not the point of this post) I caught up with Gossip Girl last night. I've missed the beginning ep (or two?). Who cares? There was a CHUCK BASS. In a PURPLE BLAZER. And a RAINBOW POLO. With YELLOW GIRL JEANS. In other words: CHUCK BASS, DO ME NOW. (that wasn't the point, either) TELL ME THINGS, FLIST. Tell me the films I should watch and the albums I should listen to before I die. I can just about make my own way when it comes to books - and if a 'recommended read' ever doesn't make me want to claw my own eyes out because boredom is too slow a death, I'll be mightily pleased. But I'm sick of going into record shops and being all 'uhhh but what if I don't LIKE anything else by the Smiths?' and coming out with Scouting for Girls, which is an okay album but, I'm starting to realise, is disgustingly pop-y. In the sense that in straight pop you can get away with writing two lines of lyrics and repeating them ad nauseam. I think I like rock (indie and otherwise), punk and all the pop hybrids thereof. I don't like horror films. Other than that, I'm open to influence. ANY. AT ALL. Specific albums would be excellent because I always get the feeling that if I knew where to start with bands like Muse and Radiohead, I'd actually like listening to them, instead of thinking I'd got stuck in a hornet's nest during mating season. C'MON. I WRITE FANFIC. I NEED ME SOME CULT REFERENCES.

Okay, Who Decided it Was "Clever" to Trip Up the "Creative Claws"?
This is a little silly and I'm aware of that, but I'm going to put it out there anyway. I'm making myself a Ravenclaw scarf. The options, however, with 'Claw scarfs are ridiculous in number: book colours? movie colours? PS/CoS style stripes? PoA style stripes? PS/CoS style fringe? PoA style fringe? No fringe And, as if that wasn't enough, a friend of mine, upon hearing that I was going to knit such a scarf asked if I was going to be creative with it and do something like add pockets to the ends (a style of scarf she knows I adore). She argued that there was no way that 'Claws wouldn't charm their scarves into being even better than normal scarves and that in Luna there's precedent for being a "Creative 'Claw". And then added that since I'm a "SlytherClaw" I oughta use the film colours, but I'm a purist too and the books say bronze! So, now I'm all confused and stalled because I can't decide on my options. Thoughts? Comments? Interpretive dances? |

Setting up a believable history of Hogwarts in fanfiction.
All right, well, I've been on a bit of a historical fix lately - specifically, I have some curiosity regarding the architecture of Hogwarts. Yes, this already sounds boring, but hear me out! A good place to start before further progressing into this post is E. D. Blanning's "...over a thousand years ago..." Britain at the founding of Hogwarts essay. :] According the Blanning, we ought to ignore the dozens of anachronisms riddling Rowling's work. But, at least for the sake of the fanfiction I intend to write, I would like to be as historically accurate as possible - but the question is, to which era am I supposed to be loyal? This is more an opinion thing than anything else, so a hand would be appreciated. I'd like to ask you this: what do you suppose Hogwarts looked like in the day of the Founders? There's more to it than that, though. It really starts with, "When did the Founders actually exist?" It's been suggested that Hogwarts was founded on the close of the tenth century, encroaching on the new millenium, because canon states its foundation "over a thousand years ago" from when Harry begins Hogwarts. But in reality, that leaves quite a bit of leeway! As for the founding of "Hogwarts", what was the school of witchcraft and wizardry? Some universities did exist at the time, but only for the most wealthy - and secular education didn't really kick off until the Enlightenment in the Renaissance. Was it initially the castle we now know it as? Was it made of stone or timber? And what about the Chamber of Secrets? If I'm not mistaken [which I very well may be], sewage systems originated in Rome - but much of Roman technology was wiped out by the Germanic invasions in the centuries before Hogwarts' foundation. As for the stone/timber question, there were very few stone castles until the 1200s a.d. of any note. Admittedly, the Welsh were a bit ahead of the times in this area - but the Welsh weren't exactly occupying Scotland, where Hogwarts should have been located. The area, I suspect, would have been more dominated by Norman architecture of wood. So, what do you think is more appropriate, as far as the time setting of the Founders and Hogwarts? Right now, for my story, I'm leaning towards a small wooden keep with the traditional motte-and-bailey set-up, though I suspect there will have to be some renewal of Roman influence later down the line. Still in some debate. As a reader, though, what would you find most believable? |
